Bodies of work interview
by Sophie, 1 Nov 2009
What I love the most about London is all the new underground music you constantly get exposed to. I go to a lot of gigs so I am aware that there is a lot of bad bands out there, but sometimes you come across a little gem. Bodies of Work is one of those little gems indeed. The band formed a year ago with danish frontman Martin Bjørck, Lizzie Holdforth on synth and vocals, Chris Morgan on drums and Andy Wright on bass. They are set upon creating dark and glittery alternative pop music, capturing melodrama with flashbulbs and sequins. Now doesn‘t that intrigue you…
I was introduced to Lizzie by my x-boyfriend a little over a year ago, so Im happy that she has agreed to meet me for a pint, so she can discuss their upcoming release of their EP “Flyers”.
I meet Lizzie in the Cat & Mutton on a quiet tuesday afternoon, She walks in wearing High heeled lace up boots, a short black and ecru tie dye dress and a huge grey lamb skin coat very Rick Owens. She has a very smily personality and I am immediately very relaxed in her company. She orders a pint of star and gets right to it…
Lizzie: So you wanna know about Bodies Of Work eh?
Sophie: Yes, so are you excited about the release of your new EP Flyers?
Lizzie: Absolutely, there is something very intermit and personal about making music, but the thrill all comes when you allow as many people as possible to hear it.
Sophie: So when exactly does the EP come out?
Lizzie: 16th of november, make sure you buy it (Lizzie winks)
Sophie: How long did Flyers (EP) take to come about?
Lizzie: We recorded 12 tracks in copenhagen in the spring and then in the summer we mixed them in London, we released the first single “better sorry then safe” and now second release is the EP “Flyers”.
Sophie: I watched the video of “Flyers” on youtube, why don‘t you explain the idea to me, and the lawnmower?
Lizzie: I think the idea can mean different things to each band member and the director but for me personally, it‘s about being ambitious and putting your mind to something that might seam far fetched to those around you, but if you just get up and do it you can make it happen. So the lawnmower represents that sentiment, because we pushed it all the way from the british country side to the millennium bridge, something seemingly impossible. “lets see what‘s out there” is the refrain in the song “Flyers” and we wanted to capture this in the video, and go on an adventure at the same time.
Sophie: Christ that was some explanation, so your all very involved in the artistic direction of the video?
Lizzie: Yes along with the director Adrian Molinos, it‘s important to maintain artistic control, and we‘re all very creative people.
Sophie: Im gonna have to ask you some fashion related questions now if you don‘t mind.
Lizzie laughs: I‘ll give it my best shot.
Sophie: So what is the style of the band, is this something you discuss?
Lizzie: We think it‘s important to look like a band, and this is always considered for stage and video. But with four very different personalities and very limited budget Im not really sure what the outcome is, we always wear black boots though. So I guess you can call us a black booted band haha…
Sophie: And you, do you spend a lot of time and money on clothes?
Lizzie: Well I am a girl so a lot of my money goes on clothes (and records).
Sophie: What was the last thing you bought for your autumn wardrobe?
Lizzie: well I went on a shopping spree last week and got home with thigh high black boots and this lamb skin coat.
Sophie: Do you have a favorite designer?
Lizzie: No, I don‘t pay any attention to that stuff, I‘ve always been more creative with my wardrobe instead of spending lots of money on it, so designers have never interested me.
Sophie: So is there anything you‘d like our readers to know?
Lizzie: Well we‘re signed to danish indie label TigerSpring and our first single is on rotation on danish national radio, so all I can say is to look out for our EP “Flyers”.
Lizzie and I finish our drinks and before I go she invites me to her next gig at Bloomsbury bowling alley for a Halloween party on the 30th of october. So if any of you danes happen to be in London for Halloween make sure you check out BODIES OF WORK. You can watch the video for “Flyers” at the bottom of the main page…
