Whyred Art Project
by O'Malley, 17 Nov 2009
Whyred is launching their new art project tonight, which consists a short film called La Vitesse A La Pierre. The director of the film is the Swedish talent Igor Zimmermann, who has teamed up with the art photo-duo Marcus Palmqvist and Frode Fjerdingstad. (See the full version HER!)
I have given Zimmerman a few questions about the movie
What´s the idea behind the short film?
To tell a story, to make the process into an adventure. The challenge of doing a no-motion picture instead of a motion-picture.
Where did you find the inspiration for it?
I am a filmmaker and Frode & Marcus are photographers by trade. This was a nice middleground to explore a collaboration. Also, I am a big fan of Chris Markers ‘La Jetee’ (1967), which was an inspiration in terms of concept. So I wrote a script and proposed we do this collaboration together. We then made the decision that all three of us would act as photographers and directors on this project, and started coming up with ideas together. One month later we are in Sahara together, burning shoes
Where was it filmed?
It was filmed in the occupied Western Sahara, Norway and Sweden.
You have made short films for other clothing brands. Is there a special reason for that?
I’m always curious. I do whatever comes along. There can be a great deal of freedom in these type of projects as opposed to doing a campaign film (which I’ve done as well) for a brand. My interest are in ideas and visual expression – not fashion. Ideally the fashion industry will mature and realize the huge potential of film. The bar is quite low at the moment, in every way. Rarely does one get to do commercially what we have done here. So these type of projects are a great opportunity to push things!
How was it to work with Marcus Palmqvist and Frode Fjerdingstad?
Nice! The production in Sahara was just the three of us in a jeep. A great adventure. We slept in our car and drove thousands upon thousands of kilometres together.
What’s up next?
I have some personal projects that I’d like to complete. Very, very different from this one!
Thanks to Igor!
